We’re happy to introduce our new Precor Master Coaches. These regional coaches — five in the U.S. and two in Mexico — will be delivering AMT Team Fit and Queenax Foundational Courses (Queenax courses are currently only available in the U.S. and Canada where the product is being sold). Our “Meet the Precor Master Coaches” blog post series highlights each of our trainers, giving you the chance to get to know them. Enjoy!

I am not married but I am in love. My “wifey” and I have been together for eight years. We have a son and his name is Rumi. He is about to turn two. Like his Dad he cannot stop moving! We are expecting another one in December.

In regards to family, I’m saving the best for last. My daughter, Chloe. She is the best thing that ever happened to me. I can’t believe how much she has taught me. Between her and Raina entering my life it was a complete renaissance – a new beginning that has brought me mounds of joy. I couldn’t be any happier… but I am making room for more!

What got you into fitness?

The speed skating is what got me into the business. I had the pleasure of playing basketball in college and a little bit overseas. It got to the point that my skills as a basketball player and again as a skater began to fizzle. I didn’t want to not be involved in athletics so I chose to become a trainer.

From the beginning of my career, there was one particular goal: ”Make an impact”. That statement still holds true to this day. I cut and paste it into everything that I do, whether it is industry-related or life. At this point in my career I prefer to be considered a coach. I believe anyone can train – coaches inspire. Coaches make an impact. That’s what I want to do and I plan on doing that for as long as I can.

How many years have you been involved in the fitness industry?

I’ve been involved in the fitness industry now 20 years.

What fitness certifications do you hold?

I have over 30 certifications and continuing education activities. Here are just a few:

  • NASE – Speed and Explosive Specialist (2009)
  • USAW – Sports Performance Coach – Club Level 1 (2006)
  • NSCA – Personal Trainer/Strength and Conditioning Coach (2005)
  • NASM – Personal Trainer (2002), Performance Enhancement Specialist (2004)
  • ACSM – Health and Fitness Instructor (2000)

Why did you want to be a Precor Master Coach?

On my bucket list I wanted to be an ambassador or at least represent a global brand. I’ve done that with Precor. I also wanted to be considered an educator of some sort and give back what I’ve learned. Thanks to Precor, I am going to be doing just that as well.

What is your favorite piece of Precor equipment?

My favorite piece of equipment from Precor is the almighty AMT!

What is your favorite move to do on Queenax equipment?

It’s almost not fair to ask what my favorite Queenax move is. But if I had to pick a favorite tool on Queenax, it would be the superfunctional.

What’s your favorite personal fitness story or memory?

In the 6th grade I wasn’t able to engage in too many athletic contests. I had a heart murmur. It blew my confidence away at the same time. My PE teacher came up with a push up test. I could not complete one push up. He understood but was more disappointed in my reaction. My reaction was that I didn’t care. Hours after that conversation, I technically started training. I had three months until the test was to be taken again. My goal was to do at least three. I asked for advice. I went to the Boys & Girls Club. I did everything that anyone who was willing to offer advice wanted me to do to get better. Three months came and went.

My PE teacher called me up. He said just to try my best, and that one is all we are looking for. I ended up doing 10! At the end of the class he pulled me aside and told me how proud he was. He said it was about character and making an impact. That was understatement. He then said “You will never forget this day!” Well, here we are 35 years later!

Tell us about a time you were able to help a client reach and/or exceed his or her fitness goals.

I had been a trainer for maybe two years at this point in my career. I really dove in, taking every course available. I mentored with whomever I thought was worth listening to. It was all sinking in, and I was extremely motivated.

I met this gentleman who was in finance but he was also an engineer, and was “not in shape.” He had graduated top of his class at MIT and when he put his mind to something, it was going to get done.

He asked around and got me to sit down with him. His exact words were “I am going to do a triathlon and you are going to help me.” Let’s just say I broke out into full laughter – I had no idea what it took to take the layperson and prepare them to jump into the water, bike shortly afterwards, and then run for a while. It didn’t matter it was just an Olympic distance.

He saw something in me I didn’t. I went into overdrive and took what I knew and created a program. His six months of intense training included swimming in the 50-degree water of the Bay Area, and biking in the hills of the Presidio. The razor-sharp focus he had was infectious. My career, like his fitness and wellness, went into overdrive. He completed the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and jump started a young man’s career all in one fell swoop. It’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever been involved with. It’s also one of the proudest. He and I are still very good friends.

What’s your favorite fitness mantra?

I’m old school and there are too many mantras. I am going to go with: “JUST DO IT.”

What’s your favorite movie?

Once again not fair… I love going to the movies. I’m going to go with “Pulp Fiction.”

Give us a random fun fact about yourself!

I guess my random fun fact is I love sneakers and shoes, a lot! I also love to travel. I find that to be fun because not only do I want to know what it looks like in the Hagia Sophia, I want to know what it sounds like. Niagara Falls is fun to see, but not as much as fun as feeling the mists all around you when you are in the thick of it. Seeing a pic of the hills of Tuscany is breathtaking but not as much as riding a bike through it. That’s what I find to be fun.
