The YMCA East Hampton RECenter is a collaborative venture between the Town of East Hampton, the Village of East Hampton, and the YMCA. Programs held at the facility are designed to enhance lives and promote members having a healthier, happier lifestyle. Their 21,000 square foot facility features modern architecture, however, the original floor layout was not ADA-compliant and did not maximize the floor space effectively.
During the summer months, the YMCA at East Hampton is busiest, due to the flux of members who venture to the Hamptons to get away from the overcrowded streets of New York. They cater to affluent exercisers, and redesigning and refreshing their layout was imperative to continue to attract new members.
The biggest challenge that Glenn Vickers, YMCA Executive Director, faced was equipment constantly breaking down and response time to get the equipment repaired.
On top of this challenge, Glenn also was concerned about the layout/design of the floor space. The East Hampton YMCA has a challenging floor space with several small areas, and he knew he needed to redesign and refresh it in order for members to get the best experience.
After completing the Glen Cove YMCA and Great South Bay YMCA refresh and redesigns, Anthony Montalbano, Senior Executive Director, YMCA Long Island, brought in, Gary Weingarten, Precor Key Account Manager, to help Vickers. Weingarten worked with Vickers to completely redesign the YMCA East Hampton RECenter. Vickers said he chose Precor because of “service turn-around time, remote upgrades and updates to equipment, the range of motion the product provides, and the ability to provide exercise equipment that every person, no matter their fitness level, feels comfortable using.”
Weingarten and Vickers together changed the entire design of the cardio area. Working with 3D renderings of the facility before, during, and after, they were able to create more functional space. They removed all their old cardio equipment and upgraded to the fully networked P82 console on the Precor Experience Series 800 Line of cardio equipment. Also installed were Spinner® Shift™ Indoor Cycles and select strength products from the Discovery Series Selectorized and Discovery Plate Loaded lines.
Since their grand re-opening on May 28, 2016, the YMCA East Hampton RECenter has surpassed their membership numbers. The equipment layout and design has maximized the YMCA’s space for their members. By networking their cardio units, they are able to attract more members by providing personalized workouts through the Preva operating system, Video On Demand, and a faster quad core Android® operating system. They are also able to create direct-to-exerciser communication which allows them to promote personal training, and other new or exciting news. Having Preva Business Suite (PBS) and exerciser activity report provides Vickers and his team insightful information about their members’ cardio usage including number of workouts, total minutes exercised, total distance traveled, total calories burned, and last workout date. This helps them when evaluating equipment mix, equipment uptime, and overall maintenance.
