Fitness Tests: Just How Fit Are You?
At the start of any fitness program, it's a great idea to find out your initial fitness level so you can look back at the end of your program and see how far you've come. Any fitness test that measures the four modes of fitness – muscular endurance, muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility – provides a great barometer for physical fitness.
As with most things fitness, there's more than one way to skin this cat; there are literally hundreds of different tests that you can do at home to figure out your starting fitness level. Read below for a few fitness tests that will give you the bottom line on your physical fitness.
As with any activity, please get clearance from your doctor before performing any physical activity.
Presidential Fitness Test
The Presidential Fitness Test gauges all four modes of fitness and is easy to execute too! All you need is a stop watch, a tape measure and some scotch tape. During the test, which you can administer at home or with a personal trainer at a gym, you'll run a mile (or walk 1.5 miles) as fast as you can, do as many push-ups and sit ups as you can, as well as perform a "sit and reach", which will measure your hamstring flexibility.
FBI Fitness Test
If you've ever dreamt of being a secret agent man (or woman, for that matter), try out the now-mandatory FBI fitness test. The test hits on all the essentials of any fitness test – it incorporates sit-ups, push-ups, sprinting and endurance running to gauge whether potential FBI candidates fit the fitness bill.
World Fitness Test
Wonder how you stack up against the general population when it comes to fitness and health?
All you need to do is answer a few questions about your current lifestyle and exercise habits and the World Fitness Test will give you a good idea of where you stand compared to other people in your age and gender group. The quiz was developed by the Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which began collecting demographic data to further explore the correlation between exercise and health risks.
