SIV CASE STUDY
With almost 14,000 members across its sites and Spinning® featuring as an integral day-to-day component in six out of the seven gyms, introducing the right bikes was paramount when SIV was looking to make improvements.
Tim Hicks, Head of Health and Wellbeing at SIV, states: “Several of our venues were at the point where the indoor bikes needed replacing. We wanted to take the opportunity to ensure any new bikes met the changing needs of our class offering and members. We looked into a number of different brands in detail and ultimately decided the Precor Spinner® Chrono bikes ticked all the boxes.”
The Trust installed 25 Spinner® Chrono bikes at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, 23 at Concord Sports Centre, and 28 at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, along with a small equipment change at Springs Leisure Centre. Instructors also underwent a two-day SPINPower® Program Certification.
Hicks continues: “Investing in and improving the health and wellbeing of the people in Sheffield is always a priority, and our Spinning® programme is comprehensive and extremely popular, so it was important for us to provide members with bikes that would help them achieve their goals. We found the Spinner® Chrono bikes to be very smooth when test ridden and the added capability of intervals, as well as the association with the world-renowned Spinning® brand, helped cement our decision.
“The console also played an important part in the decision process, as we particularly wanted a multifunctional display, indicating power and RPM readings. We’ve already seen the impact it has on the way people train and the improvement in their fitness levels.”
Bryony Winfrow, Fitness Manager at SIV, underwent a two-day bespoke SPINPower® training course, along with other SIV Spinning® instructors, to understand both the physics and the physical behind the watts; what power is, how it is measured and why it is important, the relationship between power, RPE, heart rate and cadence, how to determine baseline fitness markers and SPINPower® Training Zones, and how to lead fun and effective rides that encourage members back.
Winfrow explains: “The workshop was a great hit, as SPINPower® programming allows training data to be tracked by smart phone or transferred to leader boards, helping to improve member training and the overall class experience. We are actively looking to incorporate power training formally into classes. However, in the meantime, we are utilising the skills obtained on the course.”
Hillsborough Leisure Centre features the majority of SIV’s daily Spin® classes, running 27 45-minute classes per week, as well as the occasional 60-minute or 30-minute session, from 6:10am through to 7:30pm. The overall goal is to remain inclusive to anyone that wants to participate.
“As you would expect, early morning and early evening classes are always very popular and often at 100% capacity. However mid-morning and noon classes at Hillsborough Leisure Centre also pull in the crowds,” says Hicks.
Occasionally the centres run specific Spin® sessions for sporting groups and have planned themed classes, such as summer fiestas, 80’s extravaganza, Halloween and Christmas. The Spinner® bikes are also utilised in circuit classes and ‘Silver Circuits’ to try and introduce new people to Spin® classes.
Hicks concludes: “Having received great service from Precor in the past, SIV is excited to be moving forward with Precor, who won a competitive tender to become our equipment partner. Hopefully there will be even more changes in the pipeline soon.”
