Rise and Shine: 8 Healthy Breakfast Ideas and Choices

Whether you’re the type who likes to sit down and read the daily newspaper over a hearty breakfast, or you find yourself pressing snooze one time too many and rushing out the door in the morning, you should always fuel your day with a nutritious breakfast.

The energy your body draws from your breakfast will allow you to power through your morning and leave you less hungry throughout the day. Start your day off with some of our favorite healthy breakfast choices that are delicious and good for you.

At the Table

When you’ve got time to sit down and have a full meal, try one of these tasty options.

Avocado toast

This one is so much better than your normal boring toast and jam, and is more filling.

Top a thick, toasted slice of whole wheat bread with sliced or mashed avocado. Drizzle a little olive oil on top, sprinkle a bit of salt and pepper, and voila -- you’re ready to indulge! If you’re feeling adventurous and have time, experiment with other toppings that go well with avocado, such as sliced tomatoes, bacon (in moderation, of course), almonds, poached eggs, sprouts, a little of your favorite cheese, or soy sauce.

Breakfast sandwich

For a busy day, you’ll want something that’s going to keep you full for a long stretch of time, and this breakfast sandwich is sure to deliver.

Toast your favorite healthy English muffin or sandwich thin. Add lean ham, scrambled eggs, a bit of reduced-fat mozzarella, a slice of tomato, and spinach.

Banana pancakes

For our gluten-free and dairy-free friends out there, this recipe from the blog Top With Cinnamon for banana pancakes is just for you! Did we mention that it’s only 2 ingredients, too? This pretty much means that it’s perfect for anyone.

Cereal

A favorite for people of all ages due to its quickness and relatively cheap price, cereal is a traditional breakfast staple. With so many sweet and tempting options out there, it’s certainly not easy to choose the right kind of cereal.

You want a cereal that is packed with vitamins and nutrients rather than one that's filled with sugar (can you say sugar crash?). Check out Greatist’s list of 20 healthy cereals and learn more about how to make wise choices when you’re in the cereal aisle at the store.

On the Go

These portable foods will make breakfast a breeze for those days that you need to run out the door. Pair a few together and you’ll be good to go.

Fruit

Our antioxidant- and vitamin-packed favorites for starting out the day include bananas, grapefruit, oranges, grapes, and berries galore – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries; the list goes on and on. Washing and prepping your fruit the night before and storing it in a container in the fridge makes it fast to grab and be on your way in the a.m.

Hard-boiled eggs

A yummy option that is easy to prepare the night before, hard-boiled eggs are fast and simple. They offer a lot of protein and nutrients, but are high in the cholesterol department. Hard-boiled eggs should last for a week in the fridge if kept in their shells, and if peeled, will last a few days.

Greek yogurt

Another protein-filled food that is thick and creamy, Greek yogurt is prime for taking on-the-go. While many sugary options exist, you should stock up on plain Greek yogurt and add in your own toppings. We suggest honey, berries, or wholesome granola.

Steel-cut oats

Full of protein and fiber and a good source of carbohydrates, these oats are a smart alternative to the sugary rolled-oat oatmeal you may be used to.

Although steel-cut oats take a little longer to cook than other oats, you can prepare them on Sunday night and they’ll be ready to go for the rest of the week. Learn how to make creamy steel-cut oatmeal ahead of time thanks to The Kitchn.
